The road where a reward awaits

I was training on a road from Onojo General Park (Madoka Park) in Fukuoka Prefecture to Dazaifu via Shioji Forest Road. It is a concrete road that is quite undulating and a bit bumpy, but I had deliberately chosen such a road so that I could handle any road in preparation for overseas races, so this road was a perfect training ground for me.

I was still a beginner runner, but my full marathon was under 5 hours, but anyone at that level could run up the course without resting. There are some steep paths in the middle of the course, where some hikers are, but after passing through them, you will come to an observatory where you can see the whole city of Dazaifu. When tired from practice, we would take a side trip to get some good air.

After that, we would slowly descend from Mt. Shioji and run about 10 kilometers toward Dazaifu. At the approach to Dazaifu, we walked and bought umegae mochi (plum cake) to visit the temple. You can’t eat a lot while running, but the small umegae mochi are just right for eating. Some stores also offer tea. As a reward for running, I would refresh myself with umegae mochi and tea, visit the shrine to pray for a gold medal, and then run back the way I came.

MICHISHITA Misato (Para-athlete)

Born in 1977. Lost sight in her right eye when she was in the second grade of junior high school, and at the age of 25, developed an intractable disease of unknown cause in his left eye, which was later identified as “colloid trophoblastic corneal dystrophy”.

In 2003, she entered a school for the blind, and while enrolled at the school, she discovered athletics. She first started running to lose weight, but in 2008, she challenged a full marathon.

Since then, she has participated in numerous marathons under the mottos of “never give up” and “take on challenges.” In 2016, she joined Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and participated in numerous marathons, including the Hofu Yomiuri Marathon and the Beppu Oita Mainichi Marathon. In 2017, she set the world record for the women’s visually impaired marathon, which she has since broken twice. She won the gold medal in the women’s visually impaired marathon at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Her favorite meal is “eel” and her favorite food is “karaage. Her strength lies in “Team Michishita,” which supports her in training and cheering her on. There are more than 100 members. Whenever she has an important race, she always brings a small flag given to her by a team member.
